Dr. Loughridge,

I've heard so much about the potential for kidney damage due to a high protein/reduced carbohydrate wt reduction plan, and yet i've read recently about a well known cardiologist who has written that in 40 years of cardiology practice, he has yet to see a single case where a healthy kidney was damaged due to this adopted wt loss plan. The the plan is to ingest more lean protein, fewer carbs, drink more water and then supplement with vitamins. Could this in your opinion be harmful to my system?. Oh I almost forgot to include that my cholesterol and triglycerides are in the normal range.

Hello Lydia,

The high protein, high fat, reduced carbohydrate dietary plan forces individuals into a state of acidosis which inhibits the normal function of many hormones and enzyme systems. Also, this state of acidosis gives one a fetid and foul breath and generally a crashing headache accompanies these changes. The homocysteine metabolism is impaired placing individuals at vascular risk. In short, I would recommend not pursuing this diet for more than a few days.

The best of health to you!

B. P. Loughridge, M.D.
